QUALITY OF THE SOUNDBOARD
One of the most essential components of a piano is the soundboard. This board is largely responsible for the tonal quality of the instrument, which is why Schimmel places great importance on it. Years of experience have contributed to the creation of an exceptionally large soundboard relative to the height of the piano, achieved through an elaborate design. Schimmel has applied this approach to all models in the Classic and Konzert series, resulting in greater volume and superior tonal distribution. Naturally, the taller the piano, the larger the soundboard becomes. At a height of 116?cm, the Schimmel C116 is particularly suitable for placement in a living room. Not only the size, but also the curves and thicknesses of the soundboard influence the tone, and these technical aspects have been carefully refined in detail. This results in ideal vibrational characteristics across a wide frequency range, and with the characteristic palette of rich tonal colours and powerful, deep bass notes, the piano achieves excellent tuning stability.
However, it is not only the size of the soundboard that matters. Another crucial factor is the quality of the spruce used. Specific climatic conditions affect the quality of the wood. Trees grown at higher altitudes grow more slowly, producing smaller growth rings and fewer irregularities in the grain. This makes the wood slightly stronger and stiffer, which has a positive effect on the tone. For this reason, Schimmel uses only exclusively selected spruce sourced from the higher-altitude forests of Bavaria.
History of Schimmel
The story of Schimmel started in 1885 near Leipzig. In a modest workshop of approximately 13 square meters, Wilhelm Schimmel produced his first pianos and here the foundations were laid for a leading company that has now survived for four generations. In 1897 it was decided to move to a larger factory and developments followed each other in rapid succession. The first pianos were sold internationally and some royalties also belonged to the customer group. The first gold medals in prestigious exhibitions were won. In 1931 the step was made to the current factory in Braunschweig and that was a golden step. At the time of the division of Germany, it belonged to economically better West Germany, while the old factory was located in East Germany. The war was survived and in 1958 Schimmel was the best-selling piano worldwide. The family business is now in the hands of the fourth generation. The many years of experience and accumulated expertise, combined with a modern vision, means that Schimmel still belongs to the world top. Great sounding and playing pianos are the result of this.
