Maintenance of a wind instrument

Playing a wind instrument involves a number of important aspects. After playing, you should of course clean your instrument internally and occasionally polish it to keep it looking its best. These are tasks you can carry out yourself. However, there is much more involved. For example, the keys of a flute, clarinet or saxophone need to be adjusted from time to time, a trumpet or other brass instrument occasionally needs a proper bath, and a pan flute needs to be tuned every now and then. This is work best left to specialists. Fortunately, you don’t need to look far for this service – for all maintenance of your wind instrument, you can rely on Joh.deHeer!

Adjustment service

What exactly do we do during an adjustment service? During this service, the keys of the instrument are carefully adjusted. This is only necessary for saxophones, clarinets, oboes and flutes. With most of these instruments, after approximately one and a half years of use, a number of keys will no longer close properly. These then need to be adjusted—by tightening or loosening the adjustment screws, and sometimes by slightly bending the keys—so that they close again with minimal pressure.

Service

During a service, in the case of a flute, oboe, clarinet or saxophone, all keys are removed from the instrument and everything is thoroughly cleaned. Afterwards, the keys are refitted and adjusted. For brass instruments, all tubing, valves and any slides are removed, after which everything is soaked in a cleaning bath for about an hour. Once the inside of the instrument has been completely cleaned using brushes, everything is reassembled and polished. Please note that this service does not mean the instrument will be restored to a like-new condition.

Overhaul

During an overhaul, we often refer to replacing the pads (the small “rubber” components inside the key cups), removing dents and polishing any dents and scratches, and replacing worn parts. During an overhaul, an instrument that is in very poor condition is restored to a nearly like-new state.
