Enchanting Sound

At the heart of this grand piano lies its powerful and clear sound. Thanks to the balanced design and integrated soundboard, you can enjoy a rich and full sound that is both warm and expressive. A key element influencing the tone is the soundboard itself. For this, Schimmel uses carefully selected mountain spruce from the Bavarian and Bohemian forests – the cradle of tonewood for German instrument makers.

Only the very finest wood is selected, grown slowly at high altitude, allowing the soundboard to be crafted with optimal resonant properties. The trees are preselected in the forests, then cut to size and seasoned over a long period of time. Despite this intensive preselection process, only around 2% of the harvested wood ultimately proves suitable for the production of Schimmel soundboards.

The production of the soundboard is a complex and time-consuming process, in which numerous factors have a significant influence on the final result. These factors include the thickness of the soundboard at various points, the moisture content of the assembled wooden components, and the tension applied to the soundboard when it is attached to the strung back structure.

This extensive manufacturing process ensures a rich tonal palette across the entire dynamic range, an even development of tone in all registers, and a long sustain. Depending on the desired tonal character, our soundboards are produced in different ways. Soundboards with a membrane-like finish are particularly challenging to manufacture, yet they offer exceptional vibrational properties.

So-called “mineral key tops” are used for the white keys on all Schimmel instruments. These unique key surfaces have been developed by Schimmel and provide pianists with a more sensitive and refined touch. The core of the keys is made from high-quality tonewood and is designed to amplify frequencies that are difficult for the soundboard to reproduce. This enhances tonal richness and results in a more balanced sound.

Moreover, the pianist experiences the played tones through the transfer of vibrations to the keyboard, allowing for greater control over the piano’s response.
