The Yamaha CLP-685PE is the stylish black polished version of what was once the top model in the Clavinova series. Although it is now a previous-generation model, it still offers a luxurious appearance and the latest technological features of its time. As a pianist, you will hardly notice while playing that you are using a digital piano. Highly refined and realistic sounds are reproduced beautifully through both the speaker system and headphones. The GrandTouch keyboard provides a very natural touch and allows you to express even the smallest nuances in your performance. Altogether, these characteristics make it a piano that will satisfy any advanced player.
The Sounds of the Yamaha CLP-685
The Yamaha CLP-685 uses two samples taken from renowned concert grand pianos. The Yamaha CFX is a grand piano with powerful projection, characterised by resonant basses and sparkling trebles. With Bösendorfer having become part of the Yamaha group, Yamaha gained the opportunity to sample one of the most legendary concert grands alongside the CFX: the Bösendorfer Imperial, known for its warm basses and singing trebles. The combination of these two distinct sound characters makes the CLP-685 a versatile instrument with authentic piano sounds.
The powerful speaker system ensures excellent reproduction. Six speakers are positioned as optimally as possible to create the impression that the sound is coming directly from the body of an acoustic piano, simulating the ultimate playing experience. The total output of 300 watts ensures a rich sound with wide projection across both low and high registers.
A major advantage of a digital piano is that it can be played with headphones. The CFX Binaural Sampling, used for the first time in the Clavinova series, provides premium sound quality when playing with headphones. When the CFX sound is selected and headphones are connected, this technology is activated automatically. The other sounds are also reproduced in excellent quality. Thanks to the Stereophonic Optimizer, the headphone sound resembles the way the instrument would sound from within the cabinet of an acoustic piano.
The Keyboard
Yamaha has equipped the CLP-685 with the most advanced version of the new GrandTouch keyboard. GrandTouch is the successor to the NWX keyboard, which is used in the CLP-645. The keyboard consists of individually weighted keys that increase in weight from the higher registers down towards the bass, corresponding to the longer and thicker strings of an acoustic piano. In the CLP-685, this creates a more natural key return. Every key also features a counterweight, allowing for greater control, especially when playing at low volume.
The keys themselves feel very familiar. A wooden core combined with a synthetic ivory surface on the white keys and an ebony-style surface on the black keys replicates the materials traditionally used. The ivory surface has an absorbent effect that prevents moisture build-up, ensuring the pianist maintains a secure grip at all times.
