The Yamaha Montage 6 synthesizer is Yamaha’s flagship model among synthesizers. This 61-key version is the most compact of a series of three models. The keys are semi-weighted, providing an authentic feel, making the synthesizer also well suited for pianists. The Montage represents an important milestone for Yamaha, featuring advanced dynamic control, extensive sound creation, and a streamlined workflow.

Sound

The most important aspect of a synthesizer is its sound, which in the Montage 6 is produced by a combination of the AWM2 engine and the FM-X engine. The AWM2 engine provides sounds such as pianos, drums, strings, and more, while the FM-X engine generates the classic synthesizer tones. The FM system originates from the 1980s and produced the legendary ‘80s synth sound at the time. Today, many synthesizers use other systems, but the FM system remains superior, which is clearly evident in the Montage 6, giving it that iconic sound.

Both engines are of high quality, with ample memory and outstanding polyphony, each offering 128-note polyphony. The two engines are controlled via the Motion Control Synthesis, Yamaha’s advanced sound engine technology. This engine has an enormous waveform capacity—almost ten times that of the Motif series—and delivers remarkably realistic sounds. As a result, the sound quality is exceptional, and the synthesizer produces a highly professional tone.

Functions and Controllers

The control knobs are located on the left, the display is in the centre, and the management buttons are on the right. The display is a colour touchscreen. In addition, the synthesizer features a “Super Knob,” a type of master control that allows you to adjust multiple parameters simultaneously. This enables you to change the sonic character of an instrument, and it is even possible to assign the Super Knob to a footswitch.

A headphone can also be connected to the synthesizer. The Montage 6 comes with 64 preset songs and 128 preset sounds. Additionally, up to 16 samples can be recorded on the Montage 6.
