The Origin of Yamaha Grand Pianos
The origins of Yamaha grand pianos date back to 1902, when Yamaha produced its first grand piano. In 1950, the first C-series grand piano was developed, marking the beginning of a tradition. Over more than half a century, the grand pianos have been gradually refined and optimised, resulting in today’s CX series. Preserving tradition does not mean refusing to change. The continuous pursuit of perfection leads to knowledge, techniques, and experience that form the basis for the pure, sparkling tone and fine touch of the CX models — qualities that can transform any room into a concert hall.
About the Technology
A grand piano consists of many parts and thousands of components. It is impossible to describe every element and connection individually, but we would like to highlight several unique aspects of the CX series. A first key factor in achieving rich sound is the supporting structure of the instrument. The frame provides stability, absorbs the forces exerted on it, and converts them into resonance when pressure is applied to the instrument. By making the frame approximately 20% thicker than usual, the support is significantly improved. This innovation is the first reflection of the newly designed CX series.
The heart of any piano or grand piano is the soundboard, which is set into motion by the vibration of the strings and generates the sound. Yamaha possesses unmatched technical expertise to ensure that the soundboard always provides excellent projection. Only the finest materials are used in the soundboard assembly, and the applied techniques result in optimal resonance.
The strings also play an important part in shaping the sound. Of course, the final tone is influenced by their interaction with the hammers, the soundboard, and the construction of the instrument, but the strings themselves have a profound effect on the timbre and sustain of the grand piano. The CX grand pianos use specially designed strings that produce a rich sound with sparkling treble registers and deep-sounding bass, resulting in a solid, harmonically balanced tone. Equally important are the hammers, which Yamaha — unlike many piano manufacturers — produces entirely in-house. This results in improved tonal character, responsiveness, and power.
