Roland FANTOM-06 Synthesizer

Roland FANTOM-06 Synthesizer

The Roland FANTOM-0 series is Roland's new mid-range synthesizer, featuring the same acclaimed sound engine as the unprecedentedly popular FANTOM series. 2 years ago Roland announced the new flagship workstation: the FANTOM. It came with a brand new sound engine, the SuperNatural piano sounds, and excellent software that works perfectly for both the studio and the stage. It also quickly became one of the most popular synthesizers in our store. Unfortunately for some customers there were also some disadvantages, namely the weight and price of the product were both on the high side. With the new FANTOM-06, Roland has the ideal solution for these musicians. A sturdy yet lightweight plastic housing and lower price make this an ideal all-in-one synthesizer.

Sound Engine

What made the original Roland FANTOM so popular is also contained in the FANTOM-06. Namely the ZEN-Core engine, and SuperNatural piano. These 2 engines bring hyper-realistic analog and acoustic sounds in digital form to your studio. In addition, the Virtual ToneWheel organ + plus adjustable harmonic bar is also on the FANTOM-06, making all Hammond sounds indistinguishable from the real thing. These sounds can be completely customized to your taste with hundreds of internal effects. When you are satisfied, you can save the sound in a so-called scene. 1 Scene can contain up to 16 sounds, and even play them simultaneously! In addition, the FANTOM-06 works universally with the rest of the ZEN-Core engine. This makes the Roland FANTOM-06's sound engine incredibly versatile, and perfect for the discerning musician.

Operation and hardware

One of the most acclaimed features on the original FANTOM is the way of operation. The combination of a smooth-functioning touchscreen and hands-on rotary knobs turned out to be a golden combination for many synth enthusiasts. That's why Roland has brought back the exact same controls on the FANTOM-06. The touchscreen is a bit smaller, but just as smooth and easy to use. Also, the sample buttons on the right, hands-on synth control and layer controls on the left have all remained intact. The hardware is completely different compared to the FANTOM. The new plastic housing is a lot lighter and thinner than the original. This makes the FANTOM-06 with a weight of 6 kilos very easy to transport!

Ports

The Roland FANTOM-06 is of course also very extensive in terms of ports. It has a stereo line-out, MIDI in/out and through and a 4x32 USB-Audio interface with which you can work directly in Logic Pro, Mainstage and Ableton. Roland has also added a microphone jack for use with a Vocoder. In short: the Roland FANTOM-06 series is a versatile workstation synthesizer for a relatively small purchase price.

Roland RD-08 Stage Piano

The new Roland RD-08 is a versatile, simplistic stage piano with rock-solid sounds and a compact design. Simplicity makes power, and that is exactly what the Japanese brand has gone for with this new model. It also has some very handy features, that combined with its compactness makes it probably the most accessible stage piano on the market! Are you looking for a user-friendly stage piano that doesn't have too many bells and whistles? Then this new Roland RD-88 is definitely for you!

Light and compact

Roland has put the new Roland RD-08 in the same housing as the popular RD-88. This automatically means that it is one of the lightest and most compact stage pianos! Weighing just 13.5 kilos, yet with an 88-key weighted keyboard, it is very easy to take with you to all your band practice and concerts. In addition, at just over 25 centimetres deep, it is also one of the most compact. Don't have a speaker or monitor at your disposal? No problem! The Roland RD-08 has internal speakers making it very easy to play anytime, anywhere. In short: an ideal stage piano if you don't like lugging around.

Realistic keyboard

With such a compact housing, you would think that Roland has packed a very small keyboard into the RD-08. Fortunately, this is not the case! Roland used its popular PHA-4 keyboard with RD-08. This plastic keyboard has a real hammer action and excellent expression, allowing you to play the piano excellently.

Simple but powerful

The Roland RD series has long been known for its excellent piano, e-piano, pad and synthesiser sounds. That hasn't changed with this budget-friendly RD-08 either. Now for the first time at an accessible price, you get the well-known SuperNatural engine sounds at your disposal. These sounds are no different compared to its more expensive brothers, but they are less customisable. This can also be an advantage: if you don't feel the need to edit oscillators, LFOs and complicated effects, this is a very user-friendly piano! Do you want to do a lot of customisation, perhaps with Mainstage? Then you can upgrade the Roland RD-08 for even more sounds, USB audio recording, Roland Cloud expansion and Mainstage support!

In short: the new Roland RD-08 is certainly one of the most accessible stage pianos on the market. Are you looking for a simple, compact stage with many useful features? Then the Roland RD-08 is definitely for you!

With over 7000 sounds, an unprecedented number of effects and possibilities, it is the perfect overall package for many amateurs and professionals. The FANTOM is known for its user-friendly operation and powerful analogue and acoustic sounds. Are you looking for a total package keyboard instrument for on stage, or in the studio? Then this Roland FANTOM-6 EX is definitely for you! This model has 61-keys, but a 76-key and 88 weighted-key variant are also made.

The Roland FANTOM-EX is a software upgrade on the older FANTOM models. This means that the model's acclaimed hardware remains the same, except for the EX emblem below the logo. Roland also has no reason to change the hardware of the FANTOM. The rock-solid metal housing makes this FANTOM indestructible and ideal for the touring musician. The operation in combination with the clear touchscreen LCD display also proved to be a great choice in the 1st generation. The 16 RGB pads together with the line inputs and USB stick compatibility also make this a great sampler. The hardware of the Roland FANTOM was a success from day 1, and so the FANTOM EX has taken this with it!

New and improved sound engines

So the real upgrade of the Roland FANTOM-6 EX is in the sound engines, and this is not just a small thing. Of course, Roland has also updated its older sound engines. For instance, the well-known SuperNatural Engine, which produces, among other things, the V-piano sounds, now comes with a number of new high-quality sounds. These include the German Grand sound recently launched on the RD-2000, but of course many more sounds. The tone wheel organ engine has been replaced for that of the Roland VK series, and this makes the Hammond B3 and other sounds a lot more realistic. Finally, the FANTOM-EX gets a brand new reverb engine, including shimmer and modulation reverb. In short: quite an update internally!

With the USB port, you can connect the keyboard to your PC or laptop and work with various apps, stream music or even record. You can also connect MIDI controllers to the system via the MIDI port.

Roland

Roland was founded in 1972 by Ikutaro Kakehashi in Osaka, Japan. Kakehashi had specifically founded this company to compete in the competitive market of professional musical instruments. He started with seven employees in a small shed and produced their first product: a drum machine. Not much later came their first synthesizer and soon they expanded their range enormously to all kinds of digital audio products. They are now one of the largest audio companies in the world. This is partly due to their philosophy: music is a universal means of communication that must be supported by innovation and reliability. In addition, they also find the physical quality of their products very important, which is why all their products are extremely innovative and high-quality.
