The best recorder for you! - schermafbeelding_2023-04-22_154052A great beginner’s recorder is the Aura S3B Soprano Recorder – Baroque. This recorder is the most popular type on the market and suitable for all ages. It is a soprano recorder, which means it has a medium pitch range, roughly between C4 and A6 on the musical scale. This gives it a clear and resonant tone that makes it ideal for playing Baroque music and other early music styles – which is exactly what the term “Baroque fingering” refers to. The fingering system differs from the more modern German fingering, which affects both the playing technique and the sound.

Moving on to the Aura S3 Soprano Recorder – German, we immediately see a clear difference between the two instruments. On this recorder, the fourth hole is larger and the fifth hole is smaller. This changes the fingering for the note F. The body is made of pearwood, while the block in the head joint is made of cedarwood. This reflects the German construction tradition, which is known for its warm, rounded sound. Thanks to this tonal character, the recorder is suitable for a wide variety of musical styles.

If you browse the recorder page on our website, you will also find the Aura S1 Soprano Recorder – Baroque and the Aura S2 Soprano recorder German. These are intended for increasingly experienced players. The Aura S1, for example, is aimed at highly advanced players.

Besides soprano recorders, we also offer several tenor recorders. One example is the Aura BT10N Tenor Recorder. This instrument is crafted from pearwood, a generally more expensive and high‑quality material. This tenor recorder has a bent neck, designed to make playing as comfortable as possible. It reduces strain on the wrists and fingers by bringing the lower part of the instrument closer to the player. It is tuned in F, unlike the Yamaha YRT304BII, which is tuned in C. The Yamaha model is made of ABS resin. It is suitable for all ages and is an excellent choice for both beginners and advanced players.

The sound of both tenor recorders is practically the same: warm, rich and with a rounded pitch. Because of the larger bore and lower range, a tenor recorder naturally sounds deeper and fuller than a soprano recorder.
